Location, Location, Location

The right backdrop for your Brand Session will add depth to your brand and help showcase your business in the very best light (pun intended!). But how do you know which location is the right location?

Below are 3 tips to guide you to your goldilocks moment:

It’s on brand.

Think about your brand’s core values, colour palette, and the way you want your audience to feel when they think of your business. The right session space should look beyond where you are now, and position you for what’s to come.

Is your brand daring and luxurious? Consider a space with strong architectural features that help you make a statement. Is your brand approachable and fun? Look for a location with playful elements, like patterns or vibrant pops of colour.

Neutral spaces are also full of potential. Choosing a clean, white location space will allow you to introduce your own brand style through decor, props, colour, photo surfaces, and paper backdrops. If you’ve got a creative hand, you can also try this branded wall hack from @thehardins (just give me a heads up!).

Regardless of the location you choose, be sure it’s clean! A clutter-free space ensures all eyes are on you.

It has lots of natural light.

Photography is all about light. In fact, “photography” literally means “drawing with light!” So when it comes to choosing your Brand Session space, be sure you settle on a location that has lots of it. The more natural light, the better.

Look for spaces with big windows, tall ceilings, skylights, and mirrors. If it’s an option, arrive early and give those windows a good clean (if they haven’t been already!). It might seem basic, but clean windows make a real difference.

How a house is oriented in relation to the sun will also have a dramatic effect on how much light we’ll have to work with. In general, south facing walls receive the most light. But not if a tree, building, or mountain gets in the way!

If understanding light feels like a job for an expert, that’s because it is! I work with each and every one of my clients to ensure our session location will work for their vision. And I always have a few pro-tricks up my sleeve.

It fits your budget.

A client and I were recently on the search for a fabulous shoot location. We had a very specific vision in mind and were thrilled when we found the perfect space. It really was perfect. More perfect than perfect...until we saw the price tag. Yikes!!

Budgets exist for a reason. Pushing past your limit can have serious consequences, both for your business and your personal life. If the location of your dreams isn’t in your budget, it’s simply not the location of your dreams.

There are lots of amazing options when it comes to finding a session location. If your homebase isn’t a fit, reach out to family or friends, scope out local photo studios (or ask me!), search through AirBnB, scout spots around town, or stick to the great outdoors! Your shot list will guide you to the type of space you need, based on your session goals.

Don’t Forget…

Choosing a Brand Session location isn’t about picking a fancy space that looks better than everyone else’s! It’s about choosing a space that will put your brand front and center.
